Video: Penguin wave device installation at EMEC

Finnish wave energy developer Wello has released a video featuring the recent installation of its Penguin wave energy device at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

The Penguin wave energy converter was installed at EMEC’s grid-connected wave test site at Billia Croo at the beginning of March by Orkney-based Green Marine UK.

The deployment consisted of a tree-stage operation, starting with lowering the mooring legs made of concrete blocks with heavy mooring chains to the seabed.

After that, the Penguin wave energy device was towed into position on site and connected to the mooring chains, and the installation operation was wrapped up by connecting the device with the subsea cable.

Penguin device, designed to use its asymmetric shape to convert the waves to electricity with continuous rotational movement, delivered the power generated from waves to the UK electricity grid, Wello informed last week.

This is the first of three wave energy converters due to be installed at EMEC over the next three years as part of the CEFOW (Clean Energy from Ocean Waves) project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.
