Brazil’s frontier basin lit up as TGS, SLB drive 3D seismic push

Project & Tenders

A multi-client 3D seismic survey is on the agenda at one of the frontier regions in Brazilian waters, with Norway’s energy data and intelligence company TGS and its joint venture (JV) partner, U.S.-headquartered SLB, at the helm of the campaign that will help boost the hydrocarbon exploration momentum in the South American country.

TGS, in joint venture with SLB, has shed light on the Pelotas Sul Phase 1 multi-client 3D seismic survey in the Pelotas Basin offshore southern Brazil, which includes a balanced mix of held and open acreage, providing opportunities for both near-term evaluation and additional sales related to future licensing rounds.

The Ramform Tethys vessel mobilized in December 2025 for the survey, covering approximately 13,500 square kilometers, with data acquisition expected to be completed in early Q3 2026. The project is perceived to mark a significant step in expanding the energy data and intelligence player’s high‑quality seismic coverage across what is described as one of Brazil’s most promising frontier regions.

Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS, commented: “Pelotas Sul Phase 1 will provide valuable subsurface insight and help broaden the understanding of a basin that is gaining considerable client attention.

“We have earlier announced Pelotas Norte, in the Northern part of the Pelotas Basin. We are very pleased to announce Pelotas Sul and support our customers as they evaluate new exploration opportunities in the southern part of the Pelotas Basin.”

The company emphasizes that the Pelotas Basin has seen growing interest in recent years, supported by extensive geologic analogs, including successful exploration results along the conjugate margin.

This area features a diverse range of play concepts, including turbidite systems, deep‑water channels, and stratigraphic and structural traps that remain underexplored.

The latest assignment comes days after TGS won a 3D streamer acquisition contract with an undisclosed oil and gas company in Africa and the Middle East region.
