ACL Keeps Its CON/RO Service at Halifax

Atlantic Container Line (ACL), an American shipping company owned by the Italian Grimaldi Group, is to maintain its twice weekly call at the Fairview Core Container Terminal of Ceres Halifax, Nova Scotia, with its new G4 RORO/containership vessels as the duo has inked a new contract running through 2022.

The port welcomed the newest Atlantic Star in January 2016, which is the first of the five G-4 ACL CONRO newbuilds. At 45,000 dwt, it is the largest con/ro ever built, and its hull is ice-classed 1C for North Atlantic service.

The fleet has a container capacity of 3,800 TEUs, plus 28,900 square meters of RORO space and a car capacity of 1300+ vehicles. The ships are being built by Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding and slated for delivery for the first half of 2016.

“ACL looks forward to a long future in Halifax with our large, new, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly G4 vessels. The Port of Halifax will now remain our largest port in North America, and our gateway for Canada and the US Midwest,” Andrew Abbott, President/CEO of Atlantic Container Line, commented.

“With the signing of this new agreement, we will now focus on working together to grow cargo volume,” Calvin Whidden, President of Ceres Halifax, pointed out.

ACL has been continuously calling the Port of Halifax since 1970.
