Brazil: Geotek MSCL Performs Geotechnical Survey for Petrobras in Cooperation with Fugro

Geotek personnel offshore Brazil are using the Geotek MSCL-S to analyze Jumbo Piston Cores being taken by Fugro-McClelland Marine Geosciences. They are working onboard the Drilling Vessel Fugro Explorer, which is on a two-year mission to perform geotechnical investigations for Petrobras.

The MSCL-S data is being used by Petrobras scientists and engineers prior to building oilfield infrastructure. The MSCL-S directly and continuously measures physically relevant properties for geotechnics, such as the density and P-wave velocity. MSCL-S data, especially magnetic susceptibility, is critical for core correlation and sediment horizon tracing between locations, both near and distant. The full data set also allows scientists to determine the structure, quality, and homogeneity of their cores, and thus the best locations to take samples for detailed geotechnical analysis.

This MSCL-S was installed on the Fugro Explorer in June specifically for the Petrobras expedition, with gamma density, P-wave velocity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity sensors. Geotek personnel, including Patrick and Johanna, Geoteknicians extraordinaire, have been manning the MSCL-S on the Fugro Explorer since late July 2011.
