Eekels Bags Propulsion Installation Gig for Ferry Duo

Eekels has been commissioned by Damen Bergum shipyard for the installation of electrical systems onboard two ferries, including the delivery of the diesel-electrical propulsion installation.

Eekels Wins Electrical and Propulsion Installation ContractCommissioned by the Canadian government, both ferries will be built at the Damen shipyard in Galati, Romania.

Eekels, as the sole contractor, carries the ultimate responsibility for the electrical and the propulsion installations.

Since for a large part the Canadian government requires “local content”, the installation has been designed in Canada, and the main switchboards, distribution panels as well as the frequency converters for the propulsion, each 2×1600 kW + 1x 800kW, will also be built in Canada.

Eekels will take care of the total integration. The assembly and commissioning will be executed by Eekels Romania in Galati.

The vessels will replace the out-of-date ships currently operating the ferry service connection between Farewell and Fogo Island-Change Islands on the east coast of New Foundland and between New Foundland (St. John’s) and Bell Islands.

The vessels accommodate 200 passengers and 60 vehicles. The first ship shall be delivered in September 2015.
