Fire Destroys Crane at Ghent Container Terminal

Vessel operations were suspended at the Ghent Container Terminal, Belgium following a fire incident that destroyed the terminal’s container crane on September 18th.


According to transportation company Containerships Ltd, there were no injuries to the staff on duty as the impact was limited to the crane itself as well as 1.5 day delay in vessel operations.

The company said that as from week 39 and until further notice Containerships’ vessels will call at IPG terminal in Ghent.

The port of Ghent is the third biggest port in Belgium, 43 kilometers west-northwest of Antwerp and about 58 kilometers from the North Sea.

The port has the capacity to handle Panamax ships.
