Freighter Sinks off Guangzhou Port after Collision

A cargo ship sank near China’s Guangzhou Port after colliding with another freighter at 3 am local time today, Guangzhou Maritime Bureau reports.

The rescue teams found seven crew members from the sunken ship drifting in the water. All seven men were plucked from the sea by 4:20 am local time, with no reported injuries.

The sunken ship was carrying 57 containers at the time of the collision, some of which had sunk together with the ship, and some of which have been floating around the Guangzhou Port Channel. 

Guangzhou Maritime Bureau identified the sunken vessel as the Hui Dong Fang 332, operated by Guangzhou Dongfang Shipping. The other cargo ship involved in the accident is the 85-meter Ming Yang Zhou 179.

The authorities are currently working on retrieving the drifting containers.
