GL’s FutureShip Develops Zero-Emission Concept for Baltic Ferries

A new concept for a zero-emission propulsion system for ships has been developed by GL’s subsidiary FutureShip GmbH, Ship&Bunker reports citing the company’s announcement.

The new concept is made for Scandlines’s ferries which link the island of Fehmarn with Denmark on the so-called Vogelfluglinie and it is in part derived from a previously published GL’s concept.

The zero-emission concept will be characterized by utilization of electric energy surplus from wind turbines for production of hydrogen which will be used to supply the electrical pod drives. On the other hand, optimised hull lines, propeller shapes, and procedures in port will cut the overall energy demand.

FutureShip chooses short sea route for this concept due to low energy requirements of ferries and the fact that they can bunker frequently.
