Havkraft conludes H-WEC testing

Havkraft, a Norwegian based wave energy developer, has concluded the first testing phase of their wave energy converter (H-WEC) that was deployed off the coast of Norway in December, the company announced.

The converter is working just as expected, and producing energy better than predicted, according to the company.

“The system is more effective because it captures much more energy when the boat is moving up and down from the waves. Thus it acquires energy from a large area around the boat, which is very positive,” Geir Arne Solheim, CEO of Havkraft, was quoted as saying by Fjordenes Tidende news site.

The next phase is to build full scale demonstration plant, and to automate the converter so it can start and stop by itself, depending on the speed and size of the waves.

The company hopes to initiate the project in 2015, and complete it in 2016.
