Innovatum Increases Cable Magnetizing Service in 2017

Innovatum has seen increasing demand for magnetization of subsea cables during 2017.

The company said it has magnetized 566 kilometers of subsea cable in 2017, an increase of 86 per cent when compared to 2016 (304 kilometers).

According to Innovatum, there is already over 400 kilometers of cable booked for magnetizing in 2018.

Since January 2012, Innovatum has magnetized 3,066 kilometers of subsea cable, predominantly offshore wind farm, in-field and export cables, but also various subsea telecommunications cables.

Cable magnetization

Cable magnetization is an add-on service, applied exclusively by Innovatum, to subsea cables with ferrous content at pre-lay, most commonly during load out of the cable.

The process “organizes” the magnetic field of each cable, making it more detectable by Innovatum Smartrak cable and pipeline tracking systems in subsequent post-lay surveys.

The first commercial cable magnetization was carried out in 2000.
