Port of Salalah Extinguishes Fire onboard Fishing Vessel

Port of Salalah responded to a fire onboard a fishing vessel BAEK YUNG 29 that occurred at approximately 0300 on 28 October, 2013 while berthed at the port.

The port authority has responded with all possible assistance in firefighting on both land and sea, via fire trucks and specialized firefighting equipment aboard harbor tug vessels. Response teams from government sides were also on site.

Despite efforts to extinguish the flames, the vessel was towed out of the port’s harbor waters to prevent risk or damage to other vessels docked at the port. Operations at the port are ongoing as usual and not impacted by the incident. At approximately 1130 the vessel capsized outside the port area.

All crew members aboard the vessel were able to evacuate safely and there have been no reported casualties. The cause of the fire is said to be an electrical conduction from equipment onboard the vessel.

The company is meeting with the Royal Oman Police Coast Guard and relevant officials to support investigation and clean-up efforts.
