Phase­ II of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Dredging Project Begins

Jawaharlal Nehru Port, India’s No.1 container terminal, has already started the Phase­ II Dredging Project on its 33.54 km long navigational channel.

The port has successfully completed the Phase I Dredging Project in April 2014, including the deepening and widening works on the existing channel for accommodating vessels of +6000 TEU.

This second phase will allow bigger container vessel of 12, 500 TEU to dock at JN Port.

According to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust’s announcement, this dredging scheme will be completed within a period of 24 months.

The consultancy service for project management has been awarded to M/S TATA Consultancy Engineering Ltd.

The key benefits of the project:

• handling bigger size vessels up to draft of 15 meters by using tidal window;
• increase in future container traffic;
• reducing ocean freight cost per TEU;
• faster turnaround of larger vessels;
• optimum utilization of capacity.
