Pilbara Ports Mark Monthly Throughput Growth

The month of February has seen Australia’s Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) deliver a total monthly throughput of 48.8 million tonnes (Mt), an increase of 6.2Mt or 14.8% on February 2014.

The port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 36.1Mt, an increase of 7.6Mt or 27% from the same month in 2014.

Iron ore exports for the month totalled 35.6Mt, an increase of 7.8Mt or 28% from the same month in 2014.

Imports totalled 141,000 tonnes, a decrease of 12,000 tonnes or 8% from the previous year.

The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 12.7Mt, a slight decrease of 1.3Mt or 9% from the previous year.

Imports totalled 87,000 tonnes, a decrease of 5,000 tonnes or 5% from the same month in 2014.

The month also saw the port of Port Hedland achieve two new records on Saturday, February 28, 2015.

The port dispatched a record tonnage of 1,511,977 tonnes on a single tide on eight cape-size vessels.

The port also exported more than two million tonnes of iron ore within 24 hours on the morning and evening tide, which is only the second time this has been achieved.

A total of 2,065,259 tonnes was exported, beating the previous record set last April by more than 37,000 tonnes.
