Pilbara Ports Sees Record Annual Volumes

Australia’s Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has delivered a record annual throughput of 633.5 million tonnes for the 2016 financial year, representing an increase of 13 million tonnes, or 2 percent, from last year’s annual throughput.

In June 2016, PPA achieved a total monthly throughput of 55.9 Mt, an increase of 1.8 Mt or 3 percent from the previous year.

The country’s Port of Port Hedland saw a record annual throughput of 460.4 Mt, a rise of 13.4 Mt or 3 percent.

June was particularly favorable for the port, as Port Hedland posted a record monthly throughput of 42.2 Mt, an increase of 3.3 Mt or 9 percent from the same month a year earlier.

Iron ore exports for the year increased by 3 percent, totalling 454.2 Mt, while June numbers stood at 41.8 Mt, up by 9 percent from the corresponding period in 2015.

Imports for the year totalled 1.6 Mt, a drop of 22 percent, while June imports surged by 46 percent to 164,000 tonnes.

The Port of Dampier’s annual throughput was slightly up, as the port handled 200,000 tonnes more than last year, reaching a total of 173.1 Mt, while the monthly throughput surged by 10 percent to 13.6 Mt.

Imports for the year totalled 1.1 Mt, a slight increase of 6 percent from the previous year, while June imports dropped by 43 percent.
