USA: Congressman Holds Public Meeting to Discuss Port Funding
Congressman Peter DeFazio (D–Ore.) will hold a public meeting this week in Brookings to review options to ensure dredging continues at small coastal ports in Oregon.
DeFazio requested the meeting after learning the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) informed the Port of Port Orford it was highly unlikely there would be funds to dredge the port in the near future.
USACE officials, state senators and representatives in the Coastal Caucus, among others, are confirmed attendees, including Port of Siuslaw Manager Robert Forsythe, who said on Thursday that he plans to attend not only because dredging is vital for access to the port, but also to voice the need for funds for maintenance and repair of jetties.
