Spectacular Sideways Launching of MV Reestborg

Ferus Smit GmbH in Leer, Germany launched, on Jan. 25th, general cargo vessel m.v. Reestborg for the Royal Wagenborg. The Reestborg is by far the largest ship ever built at Ferus Smit.

With a length of 170 m., breadth of 20.4 m. and 23,000 deadweight tons carrying capacity the ship is nearing the maximum dimensional limits that can be built at the Leer production site. Ships of these dimensions are normally floated out of a building dock or launched from longitudinal slipways.

The spectacular sideways launching of a ship this size (over 5,000 tons of launching weight) was a unique event that has never been seen before in northern shipbuilding.

Special bow form with negative stem profile and sharp waterlines without bulb results in less resistance at moderate speeds while having more displacement and cargo hold volume. Sharp entrance angles and less bow flare reduce speed loss in seaway. Model tests show excellent performance while breaking through ice channels .

The EEDI index for this ship is abt 50% better than the required index from 2012, and still 25% less than the future requirements for 2025.

The m.v. Reestborg is planned for delivery during March 2013.
