Louisiana LNG plant to sport ConocoPhillips liquefaction tech

Monkey Island LNG has picked ConocoPhillips’ liquefaction technology for its planned natural gas liquefaction and export facility in Cameron Parish, Louisiana.

The proposed Monkey Island project is envisaged to have a capacity of 26 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Situated on a 246-acre project site on Monkey Island in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, it is believed to be strategically positioned to provide access to deepwater shipping channels and U.S. natural gas supply.

“After an extensive technology selection study and analysis on multiple technologies, Monkey Island LNG selected the Optimized Cascade® process based on its operational flexibility, quick restart capabilities, high efficiency, and proven performance above nameplate capacity,” said Greg Michaels, CEO of Monkey Island LNG. 

“The decision marks a major milestone in advancing Monkey Island LNG’s mission to deliver TrueCost LNG™- a radically transparent, cost-efficient model that eliminates hidden fees and aligns incentives across the LNG value chain.”

The selection of ConocoPhillips’ technology is expected to enable project developers to provide customers with long-term, secure, and competitively priced LNG supply.

Based on the project’s website, the Monkey Island LNG is planned to have up to five liquefaction trains to liquefy natural gas at a production rate of approximately 5 mtpa per train. The project will also feature three LNG storage tanks, each with a capacity of approximately 180,000 cubic meters.

Darren Meznarich, who leads ConocoPhillips LNG Technology and Licensing, noted that his company is pleased to support Monkey Island LNG with its new, mega-module Optimized Cascade template, designed to reduce costs, plot size, and overall project risks for clients.

The U.S. player says its liquefaction tech yields up to 96% LNG facility thermal efficiency and lower emissions. The same tech was picked for the Coastal Bend LNG development in Texas earlier this month.

The Monkey Island location will be home to the marine facility of another LNG project, Venture Global’s CP2. The final investment decision (FID) for the proposed 20-mtpa facility was taken in late July, after which Worley was given the green light to proceed with work on the first phase of the project under its reimbursable engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract.

Shortly before that, Eni signed up to purchase 2 mtpa of LNG for 20 years from the plant’s Phase 1. This deal marked Eni’s first-ever long-term agreement with a U.S. LNG producer.
