Horns Rev 2 Subsea Cable Comes On Stream

The cable connecting Dong Energy’s offshore wind farm Horns Rev 2 to the onshore grid is back in operation, transmission operator Energinet.dk informed on Sunday.

The repair operations took about two months due to extreme weather and site conditions. The cable is 42km long and has a landing point in Blåbjerg north of Henne.

According to Energinet.dk’s Jesper Ferløv Greth, a 3.6 meter long section of the subsea cable has been replaced, after a short circuit occurred some 40 km offshore.

The Danish grid operator explained that it is not yet clear what caused the the cable to malfunction, but said that nothing suggests that external influences on the cable, such as anchor or the like, could have caused the error.

The total cost of the repair of the cable as well as compensation for the idle time is yet to be determined.
