Qatar: McDermott in North Field FEED with QP

Offshore installation and construction firm McDermott has been awarded a contract by Qatar Petroleum (QP) for front-end engineering and design (FEED) work for offshore facilities in Qatar.

McDermott, which said the contract was a sizeable one, said the FEED work would cover offshore wellhead platforms, pipelines, and cables associated with the North Field Expansion (NFE) project.

“The scope includes the design of four offshore trunk lines with intra-field pipelines, eight wellhead platforms and power and fiber optic (PFO) subsea cable rings. The FEED contract will be executed from McDermott’s Doha offices, with drafting to be executed in Chennai,” McDermott said.

McDermott, which defines a sizeable contract as between USD $1 million and USD $50 million, did not provide the exact value.

Worth noting while the Qatar contract sizeable in name, McDermott scored truly large contracts earlier this week when it was awarded (in cooperation with COOEC), contracts worth around $4.5 billion for work on Saudi Aramco’s Marjan offshore oil field development. Read more on that here.

As for the North Field in Qatar, it lies off the north-east shore of the Qatar peninsula and covers an area of more than 6,000 square kilometers, equivalent to about half the land area of the State of Qatar.

The gas produced from this giant field is processed to produce LNG, GTL, NGL, and other gas-related industries, in addition to pipeline gas for export.

Qatar Petroleum plans to expand Qatar’s LNG production from 77 million tonnes per annum (mta) to 110 mta by 2024.
