Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Examination Open until December

Tidal Lagoon (Swansea Bay) PLC is seeking development consent for the Swansea Tidal Lagoon and associated electricity generating infrastructure with a nominal capacity of 240MW.

According to press reports, Bristol City Council, Sedgemoor District Council, West Somerset Council and Cardiff City Council will submit an application for a £3m grant to the European Union for the financing of a tidal lagoon in the Severn Estuary.

Peter Kydd, chairman of the South West Marine Energy Park was recently quoted in Offshore WIND, stating that a tidal lagoon is a “more feasible solution” than a tidal barrage. He said that: “Having a structured plan to develop the Severn’s tidal power resource in this way could produce as much or more power than a Severn barrage when complete, but would avoid the difficulties of committing to a single large project from the outset.”
