USA: Worldwide Rig Count for August Up, Baker Hughes Says

Baker Hughes Incorporated​ announced today that the international rig count for August 2011 was 1,183, up 33 from the 1,150 counted in July 2011, and up 81 from the 1,102 counted in August 2010. The international offshore rig count for August 2011 was 318, up 11 from the 307 counted in July 2011 and up 11 from the 307 counted in August 2010.

The last report of rig activity in Libya was for February 2011.

The US rig count for August 2011 was 1,957, up 57 from the 1,900 counted in July 2011 and up 319 from the 1,638 counted in August 2010. The Canadian rig count for August 2011 was 473, up 126 from the 347 counted in July 2011 and up 86 from the 387 counted in August 2010.

The worldwide rig count for August 2011 was 3,613, up 216 from the 3,397 counted in July 2011 and up 486 from the 3,127 counted in August 2010.

The Baker Hughes Rotary Rig Counts are counts of the number of drilling rigs actively exploring for or developing oil or natural gas in the United States, Canada and international markets. Baker Hughes has issued the rotary rig counts as a service to the petroleum industry since 1944, when Hughes Tool Company​ began weekly counts of US and Canadian drilling activity. Baker Hughes initiated the monthly international rig count in 1975.

North American rig count data is scheduled to be released at noon central time on the last working day of each week.
